AMAC Member Cheryl’s sister losing her husband was devastating enough – but then came the letter from the Social Security Administration. Her widowed sister’s survivor benefits had been denied.

Instead of receiving support, Cheryl’s sister was told she didn’t qualify. She had worked her entire adult life, paid into the system for decades, and now—after losing her husband—was relying on those benefits to stay afloat.

The denial put Cheryl’s sister in an impossible position: either drain her life savings or return to work despite health issues and the emotional weight of losing her spouse.

Cheryl knew something wasn’t right. And as an AMAC member, she knew exactly where to turn: the AMAC Foundation. The AMAC Foundation’s free Social Security and Medicare Advisory Services help Americans correct wrongful denials and navigate confusing federal decisions.

So, the moment her sister received the notice, Cheryl reached out for help.

An AMAC Foundation advisor quickly responded and asked for all the paperwork related to the denial. The AMAC Foundation’s team is comprised of nationally accredited Social Security experts who can investigate and advise on individual situations. In many cases, the AMAC Foundation finds that the Social Security Administration has miscalculated benefits and works with beneficiaries to make it right.

Within a short time, an AMAC Foundation advisor found clear errors in the decision rendered for Cheryl’s sister.

Despite meeting the requirements for survivor benefits, Cheryl’s sister had been denied due to mistakes in how her case was processed. The advisor explained where the decision went wrong and outlined exactly what information the Social Security Administration had overlooked.

For Cheryl and her sister, it was the first time the process made sense.“It felt like someone finally cared enough to explain it,” Cheryl said.

With guidance from the AMAC Foundation, Cheryl helped her sister prepare a detailed appeal. The advisor walked them through every step, made sure crucial documents were included, and ensured each point in the original denial was addressed.

The Foundation didn’t rush the process or offer vague guidance. They provided clear, reliable direction until the appeal was complete.

Weeks later, Cheryl’s sister received the letter she had been praying for. The appeal was approved.

Not only did she begin receiving her monthly survivor benefit, but she was also awarded nearly $80,000 in back payments. These funds represented the support she should have been receiving for years, allowing her to keep her life savings intact and avoid returning to work during a difficult time.

Cheryl immediately contacted her AMAC advisor with the message she had been waiting to share: “We won the case!”

Cheryl’s sister’s experience reflects what countless Americans face every year: confusing decisions, overlooked documentation, and errors that can threaten financial stability. The AMAC Foundation exists to make sure people don’t face those challenges alone.

But this support system is only possible through the kindness and compassion of generous Americans who contribute to the mission.

The AMAC Foundation is a nonprofit organization, and its Social Security Advisory Service is offered at no cost to anyone who needs it. The advisors are able to guide families through complex cases—like Cheryl’s sister’s—because of support from donors.

Every story like this is a direct result of those contributions. When donors support the AMAC Foundation, they make it possible for widows, retirees, veterans, workers, and families across the country to get the help they’ve earned and deserve.

Today, Cheryl encourages every AMAC member to share this resource with others.

“If someone you care about is denied benefits,” she says, “don’t assume that’s the final word. Reach out to the AMAC Foundation. They will help you.”

Her sister’s victory is proof of what the Foundation—and its supporters—make possible every day.
