In the latest vindication of President Donald Trump’s efforts to clean up crime in Washington, D.C., the city’s Democrat Mayor, Muriel Bowser, issued an order this week requiring local police to cooperate with federal authorities “to the maximum extent allowable by law within the District.” As a result, Bowser said, federal law enforcement could have a presence in the city “indefinitely.”
Trump declared a crime emergency last month to take operational control of the DCPD and activated 800 National Guard troops to augment that effort. The number of National Guard troops deployed to the city had increased to more than 2,200 by the end of August, with the administration reportedly considering extending their deployment in the city through December.
However, under the D.C. Home Rule Act, the President can only federalize DCPD for up to 30 days, with that deadline approaching next week. Bowser wrote on X that the new order will “provide the pathway forward beyond the Presidential emergency.”
Bowser’s order is an acknowledgment that Trump’s plan to clean up the city is working. Violent crime in the capital had decreased by 22 percent a week after Trump federalized the DCPD. Even CNN reported on Tuesday that the President’s actions have “resulted in a 37 percent decrease in carjackings, a 50 percent drop in robberies, and a 23 percent decrease in violent crime.”
Late last month, Bowser acknowledged the extraordinary success of Trump’s efforts, saying, “We greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what MPD has been able to do in this city.”
“We know that when carjackings go down, when use of guns goes down, when homicide or robbery go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer, so this surge has been important to us,” Bowser added.
Conservative commentator Scherie Murray joined Newsmax on Wednesday and praised Bowser for actually working with the President to solve the serious crime problem.
“Well, I give her some credit. You know, she’s showing herself as more of a moderate Democrat, and so that thought and ideology being center in the Democratic Party is far gone,” Murray said. “But take her example. Take her lead. She right now is supporting the administration’s deployment of help to help [the police]. And the numbers are showing it. Carjackings are down. The use of guns are down. Homicides are down. And so she’s giving credit to the administration where it’s due, and more Democrats should do that.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed Wednesday in a post on X that the Trump administration’s efforts are leading to a significant number of arrests on a nightly basis.
“92 arrests last night and 27 illegal firearms seized in Washington, D.C.,” Bondi said. “Arrests included two homicide suspects and five arrests for assault against law enforcement. @DEAHQ, @FBI, and @DCPoliceDept also executed warrants and seized a pill press and two kilograms of narcotics.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also revealed on Wednesday that there have been 1,761 total arrests made so far as part of the president’s initiative to clean up the city.
In March, Trump created the Safe and Beautiful Task Force to serve as a joint effort among government agencies to eliminate crime in Washington, D.C. Bowser’s executive order on Wednesday established the Safe and Beautiful Emergency Operations Center (SBEOC) that will assist “in managing the District’s response to the Safe and Beautiful Task Force, established by the President, as well as the Presidential declaration of emergency.”
This center will “coordinate centralized communications; formulate post-emergency planning; formulate post-emergency operations; and ensure coordination with federal law enforcement to the maximum extent allowable by law within the District.” The purpose of the SBEOC will be “reducing gun violence, other violent crime and achieving the goals of he SBEOC workstreams: public safety and justice, encampments and homelessness, beautification and finance and economic resilience.”
