Mirroring the Left’s calls to disarm law-abiding Americans, Trey Gowdy shows his true colors on Second Amendment rights.
Following the tragedy in Minneapolis last week, former GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy, now a Fox News host, wasted no time in suggesting tighter gun control laws.
Specifically, Gowdy spouted off:
“The only way to stop [this] is to identify the shooter ahead of time or keep the weapons out of their hands. So we’re going to have a conversation of freedom versus protecting children.”
Minnesota already has numerous gun control laws on the books, such as:
- Bans on private firearm sales
- “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation laws (ERPOs)
- “Safe storage” laws
- Bans on firearms in K-12 schools
- Requiring mental health services to report mental health records to NICS
- Five-day waiting period to purchase firearms
None of these laws prevented this tragedy, instead, they disarm citizens, especially in high-crime areas like Minneapolis, who rely on firearms for self-defense and personal security.
Gowdy’s push for gun control ignores data showing that gun ownership often deters crime, with studies indicating more law-abiding gun owners who carry reduces violent crime rates.
Additionally, states who adopt laws to lessen restrictions on carry freedoms rank higher in studies of the safest states in the United States – such as Constitutional Carry states like New Hampshire, Maine, Idaho.
Furthermore, the National Association for Gun Rights is advocating for the elimination of “Gun-Free” Zones, or “Criminal Safe Zones,” just like the one that was targeted in Minneapolis.
According to the Crime Prevention Research Center, 97.8% of mass shootings happen in “Gun-Free” Zones, which only disarm law-abiding Americans and leave them as sitting ducks.
Following the tragedy, U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY-4) introduced the Safe Students Act (H.R. 5066) to repeal the dangerous Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990, which he claims:
“My bill will end the default federal policy of making schools soft targets. H.R. 5066 would make it easier for state governments and school boards to unambiguously set their own firearm policies.”
