Term of the Week: “Do not fire until you see the whites of their eyes.”
In 1774, as towns across Massachusetts began organizing militia groups, colonial militia officer William Prescott was appointed to lead a unit. A year later, a few months after the conflict at Lexington and Concord, he joined the effort to besiege British-occupied Boston.
On the night of June 16, 1775, Colonel Prescott’s task was to lead a force of 1,200 men to the Charlestown peninsula and build fortifications near Bunker Hill. As the sun rose over Boston, the British saw the newly built colonial battlements on Breed’s Hill and the battle began.
Colonel Prescott instructed his troops, “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes,” a command intended to improve their aim and stretch their limited supply of ammunition. During the battle, his men successfully repelled two British attacks on their position. However, when the British launched a third assault and the colonial fighters had run out of ammunition, Prescott ordered a retreat. Even as they fell back, he reportedly defended himself with his ceremonial sword, fending off bayonet strikes.
Though the British ultimately took control of Bunker Hill, they paid a steep price—suffering heavy losses, with nearly half of General Howe’s men becoming casualties. Despite being inexperienced and disorganized, the colonial troops had proven they could stand up to the British army.
Though a technical defeat, news of the battle unified the thirteen colonies and resulted in the appointment of General George Washington over the colonial forces around Boston in 1775.
