On November 24, 1932, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s crime laboratory—today known as the FBI Laboratory or Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory—officially opened its doors in Washington, D.C.
At its inception, the lab had remarkably modest beginnings: it operated out of a single-room space, chosen simply because it had a sink, and employed only one full-time examiner—Special Agent Charles A. Appel, Jr.—equipped with a borrowed microscope and a helixometer, a device that was more for show than practical forensic work.
The lab’s creation marked a pivotal moment: under the direction of J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI committed to applying scientific methods to criminal investigation, positioning itself as a central resource for law-enforcement agencies nationwide.
During its early years, the workload was modest by today’s standards—just a couple of hundred evidence items annually. But the lab’s scope and capability would increase dramatically over time. By the 1990s, the caseload had surged to hundreds of thousands of items per year, and today the laboratory remains one of the largest and most comprehensive crime labs in the world, with dozens of forensic disciplines ranging from DNA analysis to toxicology and latent-fingerprint examination.
The opening of the lab not only symbolised a new era in criminal-investigation practice but also helped professionalise forensic science in the United States. Under Appel’s leadership, the lab developed techniques in document examination, ballistics, handwriting and typewriter analysis, and more—laying the foundation for modern crime-lab workflows.
Of course, the growth was not without challenges. The lab’s expansion brought increasing scrutiny over its methods and scientific standards—challenges that would lead, in later decades, to accreditation initiatives and reforms.
Yet the significance of November 24, 1932, remains clear: it was the turning point when the FBI transformed forensic science from a fragmented patchwork of local labs into a national, science-based investigative enterprise. From that one-room operation to a global forensic powerhouse, the journey underscores how the quest for more sophisticated, reliable, and timely evidence analysis has evolved hand in hand with law enforcement and criminal-justice systems.
In a broader sense, the lab’s opening represents how scientific inquiry and investigative practice can converge to make crime-fighting more rigorous and systematic. It suggests a key insight: that serious crime cannot be addressed purely by boots on the ground—it also demands microscopes, chemical reagents, comparison microscopes, trained specialists, and an institutional commitment to methodical examination of physical evidence.
So when you think of the FBI Crime Lab today—handling complex DNA cases, explosives analysis, digital forensics and more—it all traces back to that modest beginning in 1932: one examiner, one borrowed microscope, and a vision for a scientific approach to fighting crime.
