Governor Tim Walz has announced plans to convene a special legislative session for gun control, hot on the heels of the tragedy at Annunciation Church.
Speaking at Deerwood Elementary in Eagan, Minnesota, Walz reminisced about his own youth, admitting, “I grew up in a simpler time when we took our shotguns to school and we went hunting afterwards,” a nod to the responsible gun culture that built America.
Yet, he’s now pushing a so-called “comprehensive package” to be unveiled soon, claiming it curbs threats “without trampling Constitutional rights” — though anti-gunners often falsely claim their gun control legislation does nothing to erode the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.
Even Minneapolis City Councilmembers are demanding the legislature to pass a California-style “Assault Weapons” Ban in the Gopher State.
Walz dismissed mental health excuses by jabbing at Republicans for past funding cuts, while demanding immediate action: “When would that time be appropriate then? Would it be after these children are buried?”
Additionally, Walz acknowledged the divided legislature means he’ll need “some Republicans to break with the orthodoxy,” admitting he can’t ram this through alone.
He’s vowing to reach out to GOP leaders for “solutions,” but so far, they’ve offered none beyond blocking his agenda.
House Speaker Lisa Demuth (R) fired back at Walz and began advocating for a $50 million school security fund.
Republicans have been vocal and even called out Walz for not consulting them first, labeling his move political theater that endangers Minnesotans’ rights more than it safeguards lives.
True safety comes from upholding the Second Amendment, not Walz’s knee-jerk reactions that disarm the law-abiding while criminals ignore the rules.
If this session slides into more restrictions on law-abiding gun owners, it will shame Minnesota’s proud hunting heritage and leave kids more vulnerable.
Second Amendment supporters must mobilize now to ensure any debate strengthens defenses — like armed guards in schools, allowing staff and teachers to carry, and ending “Gun-Free” Zones — over futile bans.
Walz warns that letting this “moment slide” is unacceptable, but the real shame is politicians exploiting grief to erode Constitutional liberties.
