NAGR Demands Shutdown of Illegal ATF Gun Registry

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tuesday, September 23, 2025

GREENVILLE, SC – The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) is condemning the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) for secretly rushing to digitize one billion gun purchase records, warning it amounts to an “illegal backdoor national gun registry.”

“In 2022, Biden’s anti-gun cronies cut a $186 million check to Eagle Harbor to digitize Form 4473s,” said Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights. “And now, deep-state bureaucrats are in a mad dash to finish building this federal backdoor gun registry before President Trump can slam the brakes on this lawlessness.”

Each Form 4473 holds a gun owner’s personal information and firearm details, creating a ready-made list that any future anti-gun administration could use to track, target, and confiscate lawfully owned guns.

“Let’s just call this what it is… a gun registry, plain and simple,” Brown continued. “Congress has flat-out banned the federal government from creating a registry of gun owners. Yet, the ATF is thumbing its nose at the law and daring gun owners to stop them.”

NAGR announced a nationwide campaign demanding:

  • An immediate halt to the ATF’s digitization scheme
  • The destruction of every record already scanned
  • Strict enforcement of the federal ban on registries

Citing West Virginia Delegate Chris Anders’ new legislation to outlaw registries, punish violators, and force the state attorney general to sue the feds, Brown challenged Congress to show the same grit.

“We need bold, unapologetic action in Washington,” said Brown. “If politicians don’t have the spine to rip this registry out by the roots, then gun owners must make their voices impossible to ignore. We are seeing a scheme similar to this happening right now in Canada – first, they forced registration of firearms, then they imposed nationwide confiscation. We can’t let that happen.”

NAGR is taking decisive action by rallying gun owners nationwide to join the fight. The organization is urging every supporter, member, and defender of the Second Amendment to sign its official “Stop the ATF’s Illegal Gun Registry” petition. Once collected, NAGR will deliver these petitions directly to the ATF—at the organization’s own expense—as a powerful, undeniable message that millions of law-abiding Americans refuse to accept a federal gun registry.
