Clark’s feat just proves that the National Firearms Act of 1934 is an outdated, illogical, nearly century-old law that is long overdue for abolition.
National Association for Gun Rights’ own Digital Content Creator, Zackary Clark, became the first person to legally register a potato as a firearm suppressor with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
Clark registered the potato partly as a protest against the NFA and to draw attention to overly broad gun control rules.
The device dubbed “TATE001,” was approved under the NFA’s requirement for suppressors, which now costs nothing to register after Congress removed the $200 requirement to obtain a tax stamp.

This sparks a discussion about the NFA’s scope and enforcement, even as the National Association for Gun Rights is pushing to eliminate the NFA completely — removing the registration requirement for suppressors and even short-barreled firearms.
Additionally, Clark noted some further legal questions that arise when registering an organic item under the NFA:
“If you plant the registered potato and it creates more potatoes, are they under the same serial number? Or is that manufacturing?”
In the end, while funny, Clark framed his registration of the potato as a form of activism that uses levity to spotlight what many view as a serious problem with the NFA: “Trying to have fun while taking on the government is the best way to do it.
