I am always looking for better ways to secure my guns. I know, so are you. As shooters, it behooves us to keep our guns out of unauthorized hands. We should always be looking for ways to upgrade safety.
Hornady has addressed the safe gun storage issue. They produce many options in that category, from multi-gun, large safes to small one-gun solutions. But the one I was interested in wasn’t one of the huge floor-benders, but a smaller two-gun safe.
I received this digi-vault, as they call it, after a long wait. I believe they are selling these almost faster than they can make them… It took a while, but it finally arrived. We’ll take a quick look at it.
My first impression was, man, that’s heavy. I understand… It’s a gun safe, even of the two-gun variety, and it needs to have some heft.
Here are its features…
- Secure, reliable storage for firearms and important possessions
- Built with heavy-duty 16-gauge steel housing
- Reinforced internal locking lugs
- Programmable 4-6 digit keypad (mine has four keys)
- Spring-loaded door for fast, convenient access
- Backup key lock
- Built-in interior light
- Pre-drilled mounting holes and a 1,500-pound-rated security cable for flexible installation options
- Dimensions
- Exterior: 9.56″H x 11.97″W x 9.25″D
How It Works
It’s pretty simple… place your four fingers on the four keys and press them in a certain order. It comes from the factory with a simple code: 1-2-3-4.
There’s a programming button inside the top that you can press in order to program your personal code, which I did. Press the button until it beeps, enter your code, and press it again. That’s it. You must add a couple of AA batteries first, of course. That’s all there is to it. I do have one piece of advice, though… after that fourth entry, stand back. The 16-gauge lid flies open and will hit you if you’re not back a bit. It uses a strong spring… There is no delay from when you hit the last key til the lid springs open, so be warned.
Once open, you have two lined shelves that will hold at least two handguns – more, if they are smaller. I put a rather eclectic mix of guns in here for this photo… guns from recent reviews that I’ve done. Here they are…

Top shelf, Century Arms Centurion 1911 .45; bottom, Trailblazer Firearms LifeCard with suppressor and Bond Arms .45 Colt/.410 derringer. I know, different, but I needed something for the pic…
The safe comes with a nice, strong cable that allows you to secure it somewhere and two keys. You can get into it with a key if your batteries go south.
That’s pretty much it, in a nutshell. For about $189, you can get one of the best two-gun safes I’ve seen in a while, and also get the Hornady name behind it. I think that’s a pretty good deal. Plus, if you need a larger safe, they’ve got you covered with everything from keyed entry to RFID. For more information about Hornday safes, please go here.
